Charley takes on South Africa in new TV show
With his all-new TV show Charley Boorman’s South African Adventure due to start on Chanel 5 next week, we caught up with the man himself to talk tough terrain, explosions, shark encounters and behind-the-scenes antics
In an interview with ABR before your departure, you said that the aim of your SA trip was to ‘get under the skin of the place’. Do you feel you achieved that?
I really think I did. Last year in Canada, we walked away thinking that there was so much more to Canada than we had imagined; I was hoping for that in South Africa and we got it in bucket loads. People see South Africa as just Cape Town or Johannesburg and they think, ‘Oh Johannesburg is dodgy,’ when it’s not really. When you venture out of those main places there’s so much more. I met a lot of people and we did a lot of funny, silly things.
What else can we expect from your new show?
All sorts, from shark diving to gold mining. We camped out under the stars, went to Robyn Island - where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his life, went on safari and saw lions do a kill.
